Should You Remove The Tack Stitching?

Tack Stitching

Tack stitching, it keeps it all together. These are the stitches that are put into your suit jacket temporarily whilst it is being made. As a consumer, you’ll most likely see tack stitching holding the vents of your jacket together or keeping the pockets shut. These are usually left in place after a suit has finished being produced, simply to help with keeping the jacket in shape (especially during shipping).

Some people often say the tack stitching in pockets should be left in place and are not meant to be opened. Others think there is no pocket, so don’t even try. The rest cut them open and use them. But what is best practice?

To Remove or Not To Remove?

Its perfectly fine to remove the tack stitching from your pockets, and use them. Thats what they’re there for. However if you’re someone who does not use their pockets, then there’s absolutely no problem with leaving the tack stitching in.

I work in the formalwear business so I agree with the lads. You certainly need to remove the tag stitching from suit vents and coat vents. The times I’ve been walking to and from work and seen guys in suits and coats with stitching that was meant to be taken out and just wanna go and grab tell him to sort out the problem! But for pockets, although they’re meant to be functional – can be left stitched. It can be a delicate job with some brands as the stitching can be quite tricky to remove. The good brands sew it loosely – little pointer.
